As a fashion writer, do you feel pressure to “get it right”? In other words, do you feel like you always have to be an example of the latest trends or are you loyal to your own style?
I usually dress according to my mood and what I feel like wearing that day. Sometimes I dress trendy, and other times I’ll wear a t-shirt and jeans. Sometimes it’s all about comfort, other days all I want to wear are my most uncomfortable (but super stylish) heels.
Do you have a certain way of navigating a store? Perhaps go straight to sale racks or only look for items that you have in mind that particular day?
I always tackle accessories after I’ve tried on my clothes. I’ll usually have less stuff to carry, and I can mix and match items with the pieces that I plan on purchasing.
Are you tempted by in store coupons that require you to go back to the store at a later date?
I think they are a great marketing tool; I’m definitely tempted by them, but I rarely use
them. As a freelance writer, I’m always working under a deadline, and it’s rare that I can drop everything to head to a sale. Shopping is something that I need to squeeze in between deadlines, and when I have some downtime (I’m still waiting for the downtime part).
Is a store’s return policy important to you? How much do you pay attention to it?
I always make sure I’m aware what the return policy is when I make a purchase. I try to purchase items that work with my current wardrobe, which means I like taking them home and seeing what works. I have also been known to purchase an item and then change my mind, so I always try to shop at stores that have a good return policy.
Have you ever used a personal shopper?
I am my own personal shopper; I enjoy it too much to pay someone else to do it for me!
What prompted you to start your blog vancitypretty? How do you decide what to post?
I was doing a lot of freelance fashion writing and wanted to develop a place to share my portfolio and all the people, brands, events, designers, and things that I discovered. It’s a labor of love and a place where I can express myself. I have full creative control over it, and write about things that I find interesting, inspiring, exciting and special.
Favorite shopping city?
New York. I lived there one summer while I was doing some training and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Every store you could want is located somewhere in New York, and there’s a wonderful balance between department stores and independent boutiques. The thrift store shopping is incredible; I got a pair of authentic satin Manolo Blahnik pumps for $9!
